ŚIVA SŪTRAS
Section I. Śāmbhavopāya - The Method of Śiva
1. Consciousness is Self,
2. Ignorance is bondage.
3. The source (Māyā) and her group, whose form is activity, (karma) are the cause.
4. The Unknown Mother (of letters and words) is the basis of (limited) knowledge.
5. Realization of the Supreme Reality is an uplifting (of divine consciousness).
6. Through union with the Group of Powers (Śakti) the world disappears.
7. In the different states of waking, dream, and deep sleep there is the delight of the fourth state (turya).
8. The waking state is knowledge.
9. The dream state is imagination.
10. Deep sleep is the delusion of non-descernment.
11. The enjoyer of the three is the Lord of Heroes (Śiva).
12. The stages of Yoga are a wonder.
13. His will power is the splendor of Śiva.
14. His body is a perceivable.
15. By uniting the mind in the heart (hṛdaya) there is realization of the perceivable and the Void.
16. And from union with the True Reality, one overcomes the power that binds limited beings (Māyā).
17. His thought is Self-knowledge.
18. The bliss of his awakened state (samādhi) is his pleasure in the world.
19. Union with the dynamic power of the Supreme (Śakti) is the origin of the body.
20. Also the joining or separating of elements and the assembly of all things.
21. From the emergence of true knowledge one acquires command over the Group of Powers.
22. From absorption in the Great Lake (of Consciousness) one realizes the generative source of mantra.

Section II. Śāktopāya - The Method of Śakti
1. Mind is mantra.
2. Persevering effort brings fulfillment.
3. The secret of mantra is Being, which is the essence of knowledge.
4. Mental satisfaction while in the belly of Māyā is the dream of ignorance.
5. On the spontaneous emergence of true knowledge, one moves into the space of the heart and attains the state of Śiva.
6. The guru is the means...
7. to enlightenment through the group of letters and words.
8. His body is an oblation.
9. Knowledge is his food.
10. On the decline of that knowledge, there is the appearance of the dream state.

Section III. Āṇavopāya - The Method of The Limited Being
1. Mind is self.
2. Knowledge is bondage.
3. Non-discrimination of the Sheaths of Ignorance is illusion.
4. Dissolution of the fundamental elements into the body (should be contemplated).
5. Withdrawing prāna into the center channel and control, detachment, and separation from the gross elements (should also be contemplated).
6. Supernatural powers are due to a veil of delusion.
7. But, from the complete conquest of delusion, the yogi masters the inherent knowledge.
8. He is awake and the second (the world) is his light.
9. His self is a performer.
10. The individual soul is the stage.
11. The senses are the spectators.
12. Through spiritual intelligence comes realization of Truth.
13. And (the yogi) achieves the state of freedom.
14. As there (in his samādhi) so elsewhere (in the world).
15. Giving full attention to the Source.
16. Established there, he easily dives into the Ocean of Bliss.
17. And he attains creation according to his own measure.
18. As this knowledge remains, rebirth disappears.
19. (But when this knowledge waivers, he succumbs to) the goddess of letters and the mother of limited beings.
20. The fourth state (turya) should be poured, like oil, into the other three.
21. One enters that state by being immersed in Self-awareness.
22. When vital air is controlled, unity is perceived.
23. But between states of samādhi, inferior thoughts may arise.
24. Then, when Self-awareness unites with objective consciousness, the lost state of samādhi returns.
25. And he becomes one with Śiva.
26. Maintaining the body is a pious act.
27. His speech is prayer.
28. Self-knowledge is his charity.
29. Who is established in the Protector of Beings is, clearly, the means to that knowledge.
30. The universe is the expansion of his power;
31. Both the maintenance and dissolution, too.
32. But even though there is the occurrence of those (manifestation, maintenance, and reabsorption of the universe) there is no break in his being the knower (of Truth).
33. The yogi considers both pleasure and pain to be external.
34. And, being liberated from those, he is One.
35. But the one who is entangled in delusion, his very nature is activity.
36. On the disappearance of duality, a new creation is produced.
37. Creative power comes from one's own experience.
38. The three states are enlivened by the main state (turya).
39. As with the mental states, so too with the body, senses, and the objective world.
40. Due to the craving for objective experience, the born being’s attention flows outward.
41. But, having attained realization of That by ending desire, there is a complete disappearance of the individual being (jīva).
42. Then, considering the body of gross elements as a garment, the liberated increasingly becomes one with the Highest Lord.
43. Life force (prāṇa) is naturally interconnected.
44. What is there in the left, right, and middle channels but prāṇa? By meditation on the inner center of consciousness...
45. there is the reappearance of complete awakening.
2. Knowledge is bondage.
